It doesn’t happen often that so much undisputed and up-to-the-minute jazz talent is crammed into one trio, but this is the case with GURLS. Or – forget about “talent”: these prizewinning folks have gone far beyond that stage. They were a finished product a long time ago.
In GURLS we find three of Norway’s most sought-after musicians. With their playful energy, sparkling self-confidence and unique levels of experience, together these three musicians form a gentle but funky unit of bubbly, spontaneous communication with more than a hint of depth.

Run Boy, Run
The group’s debut recording, Run Boy, Run, is a genre-transcending witch’s brew featuring lyrically playful musicians who address gender roles and norms, humour and (confrontationally) female sexuality. It is refreshing and audacious, and of course rightfully so.
In GURLS we hear Ellen Andrea Wang on bass and vocals. Hanna Paulsberg, who founded the trio, is on saxophone and vocals. The last member is Rohey Taalah who, with her band “Rohey”, is on the road to success in her own right. She replaced Emilie Nicolas, who was involved in starting GURLS when she encouraged Paulsberg to share the songs she had written about what she had experienced in her own life.

GURLS
One of Norway’s best vocalists, Rohey Taalah, comes from Oslo and has taken the Norwegian musical world by storm in the past year with her band, called simply Rohey. Rohey received the Trondheim Jazz Festival’s Talent Award in 2015, and the grounds were specified as follows: “Trondheim Jazz Festival’s Talent Award for 2015 is being given to a free and fearless singer with genuine curiosity and tremendous energy in everything she does. She is utterly distinctive and has a powerful expressive force, and is in addition a very talented songwriter.”

The extremely active bass player Ellen Andrea Wang has been touring with her own bands (EAW, Pixel) for the past few years as well as with the legendary drummer Manu Katché. Last year she played with Sting. Wang received the prestigious DNB Award at the Kongsberg Jazz Festival in 2015. Audun Vinger, a reviewer for the newspaper Dagens Næringsliv, wrote the following in September, 2017: “Ellen Andrea Wang is broadening the scope of Norwegian jazz.”

Prize-winning saxophonist Hanna Paulsberg has enjoyed great success with her own band, Hanna Paulsberg Concept, with whom she has released three records. Paulsberg has also played together with musicians such as Chick Corea, Bugge Wesseltoft and Bobo Stenson. Paulsberg was selected as an ambassador for the Norwegian University of Science and Technology in 2015, and was awarded the title Young Nordic Jazz Comet in 2011. Kim Kleve, a reviewer for the newspaper Dagbladet, wrote the following after the Molde Jazz Festival in 2017: “What really makes my soul vibrate is the way Hanna Paulsberg plays the saxophone. I have never yet witnessed her at a concert where she didn’t add something extra.”
